Unpredictable harm from antibiotic abuse

In the morning of 12/1, Department of Animal Health in collaboration with Dan Tri newspaper organized a seminar on "Management and use of antibiotics for sustainable agriculture development"

Need to use reasonably, not overuse of antibiotics in animal husbandry.

According to the Department of Agro-forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance (MARD), the use of banned substances, abuse of veterinary drugs, chemicals and antibiotics in aquaculture will lead to the possibility of chemical residues. in food. This residue is difficult to remove during processing and storage, if accumulated after 1 time of use, it will affect consumers' health. For example, the antibiotic Chloramphenicol was formerly an antibiotic that specifically treats many infections but was later banned because of the side effects that inhibit bone marrow activity leading to anemia and bone marrow failure. possibility of causing blue-gray syndrome in newborns.

The abuse of chemicals and antibiotics can lead to the development of drug-resistant strains (oily), so when treating diseases for humans will not be effective. In economics, the harmful effects of the use of banned substances, the abuse of veterinary drugs, chemicals, and antibiotics in aquaculture have caused many seafood export shipments of enterprises (enterprises) in our country to be Foreign authorities warned of chemical residues and bounces, causing great economic losses. This directly affects businesses and aquaculturists, causing them to suffer, even losses and bankruptcy.

Dam Xuan Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health, said that if not managed and improved knowledge, antibiotics will spread in the market, used arbitrarily and indiscriminately. Then, expensive antibiotics will not work. Moreover, the drug-resistant strains from animals can be transmitted to humans, creating a burden on the health sector, the community, causing great damage to the people. The representative of the Department of Animal Health said that there are many inadequacies that increase drug resistance. In particular, paravets are not well trained so many paravets do not master the principle of antibiotic use. This leads to arbitrary use, even the use of expired drugs, leftover drugs to inject to pets.

Overuse of antibiotics in veterinary drugs will cause unpredictable consequences such as distorting pathological symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose, cause allergies, liver, kidney, auditory nerve damage, bones ... even cause cancer. Facing this situation, currently, the licensing of importing antibiotic materials for making veterinary medicine has been strictly controlled by the Department of Animal Health. In the import license, Department of Animal Health stated that antibiotic materials are imported to be used for veterinary medicine only; request the importing unit to report the use and business for the right purpose before registering to import raw materials for the next shipment.

However, in order to have a sustainable agriculture, according to experts, it is necessary to soon develop and finalize legal documents stricter and closer to the responsibility of production facilities. , trading and using veterinary drugs; increase investment in propaganda programs on the causes and consequences of antibiotic resistance and proper use of antibiotics. In addition, it is necessary to establish an information channel reflecting adverse effects and adverse drug reactions; building a veterinary pharmacological warning system, assessing the harmful effects of veterinary drugs on users, animals and the environment. Organize traceability of chemicals and antibiotics residues for returned export shipments to inspect and handle antibiotic and veterinary drug suppliers outside the list.

At the workshop, experts of the Ministry of Health proposed to closely monitor antibiotic raw materials imported to produce medicines for medical treatment, especially antibiotics banned from use in animal husbandry and aquaculture. aquatic products, ensuring that imported antibiotic raw materials are used for the right purposes and subjects.
